Marks percentage — How to calculate percentage

Report cards turn marks into a percentage, so that tests of different sizes can be compared. Add up the marks you scored, add up the total marks, divide, and multiply by 100.

How to work it out

Scored over total — “percentage = marks scored ÷ total marks × 100”

  1. Add the marks scored in all subjects, and the total marks of all subjects.
  2. Percentage = marks scored ÷ total marks × 100.
  3. Marks needed for a target: the target % of the total marks.

Use it for: Report cards, board exam results, admission cut-offs and scholarship forms.

Worked example: Diya scored 435 marks out of 500 in 5 subjects (100 marks each). What is Diya’s percentage? → 87

  1. 5 subjects of 100 marks each: the total is 5 × 100 = 500 marks.
  2. Percentage = marks scored ÷ total marks × 100 = 435 ÷ 500 × 100.
  3. 435 × 100 = 43500, and 43500 ÷ 500 = 87. So it is 87%.

Check: 87% of 500 = 87 × 5 = 435 ✓
