How to work it out

Part over whole — “percent = part ÷ whole × 100”

  1. Find the whole (the number after “of”) and the part.
  2. Percent = part ÷ whole × 100.
  3. Multiply the part by 100 first, then divide by the whole: 18 × 100 = 1800, and 1800 ÷ 72 = 25, so 25%.

Use it for: Comparing scores, “what share of the class…?” questions, and checking any percent answer.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: What percent of 80 is 28? → 35

  1. Percent = part ÷ whole × 100 = 28 ÷ 80 × 100.
  2. 28 × 100 = 2800, and 2800 ÷ 80 = 35. So it is 35%.

Check: 35% of 80 = 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28 ✓
