Final challenge: mixed percentages — How to calculate percentage

How to work it out

Find the 100% — “first ask “percent of WHAT?” — that number is the 100%”

  1. Find the base — the number that is 100% (the whole, the old value, the cost price or the marked price).
  2. Choose the formula: part = p% of the base, or percent = part ÷ base × 100.
  3. Check the answer by working backwards.

Worked example: A tank has 300 litres of water and 35% of it is used. How many litres are left? → 195

  1. 35% of 300 = 35 × 300 ÷ 100.
  2. 35 × 300 = 10500. Divide by 100 (take away two zeros): 10500 ÷ 100 = 105.
  3. New value = 300 − 105 = 195.

Check: 65% of 300 = 65 × 3 = 195 ✓
