What percent means — How to calculate percentage

The word percent comes from “per cent”, which means “for every hundred”. 45% simply means 45 out of every 100. If a grid has 100 squares and 45 of them are coloured, 45% of the grid is coloured.

How to work it out

Out of 100 — “per cent means “for every hundred””

  1. Percent means out of 100: 45% is 45 out of 100.
  2. The whole thing is always 100%.
  3. The part that is left = 100% − the part you have: 45% coloured means 55% not coloured.

Use it for: Marks out of 100, “50% off” signs in shops, battery and download bars, and every other lesson in this course.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: A grid has 100 squares and 37 of them are coloured. What percent of the grid is not coloured? → 63

  1. All 100 squares make 100%, and 37 out of 100 = 37% are coloured.
  2. Not coloured: 100 − 37 = 63, so 63%.

Check: 37% + 63% = 100% ✓
