How to work it out

Over 100, then simplify — “write the percent over 100 and cut it down to lowest terms”

  1. Percent → fraction: p% = p/100, then divide the top and the bottom by their HCF (40/100 = 2/5).
  2. Fraction → percent: multiply the top and the bottom to make the bottom 100 (3/4 = 75/100 = 75%).
  3. Learn the friends: 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 3/4 = 75%, 1/5 = 20%, 1/10 = 10%.

Use it for: Comparing scores, the fractions chapters of Class 5–7, and spotting easy percents like 25% = 1/4.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 40% as a fraction = 2/5

  1. Percent means out of 100: 40% = 40/100.
  2. Divide the top and the bottom by 20 (the biggest number that goes into both): 40 ÷ 20 = 2, 100 ÷ 20 = 5.

Check: 2/5 = 4/10 = 40/100 = 40% ✓
