The p tag makes a paragraph: the browser puts a little space before and after it. Inside a paragraph, the br tag starts a new line, which is handy for poems and addresses. br is an empty tag — it has nothing inside, so it has no closing tag, just like img, hr, input and meta. Many spaces typed in your code are shown as just one space.
