Headings h1 to h6 — HTML and CSS for kids

HTML has six heading levels, from h1 to h6. The h1 heading is the biggest and most important — usually the main title, used once per page. Then h2 for big sections, h3 for parts inside them, and so on down to h6, the smallest. Headings are shown bold by default and help readers and search engines understand the page.

Code tip

Small number, big heading — “h1 is the main title; each bigger number is a smaller heading”

  1. There are 6 levels: <h1> (biggest, most important) to <h6> (smallest).
  2. Use one <h1> for the main title; <h2> for sections, <h3> for parts of a section.
  3. The smaller the number, the bigger the heading.

Use it for: Giving a page a title and sections, school project pages and blog posts.

Worked example: 🔠 Which heading shows the BIGGEST text: <h4>, <h2>, <h3> or <h6>? → <h2>

  1. The smaller the number, the bigger the heading.
  2. Of 4, 2, 3 and 6 the smallest number is 2.

Check: <h2> is bigger than <h3>, <h4> and <h6> ✓
