Reflecting and feedback — Leadership skills for students

After every project, good teams look back: what worked, and what to fix next time? “Our meeting ran long; we need a timekeeper” is a useful reflection; “It was fine, whatever” is not. Give feedback with a positive first and then one clear tip, and when you receive feedback, say thank you and use what helps.

Leader's tip

Look back to move forward — “what went well, what to do better next time”

  1. A useful reflection names what happened and one change: “Two members had no task — share jobs at the start.”
  2. Helpful feedback is kind, specific and gives a next step: “Your speech was strong; slow down near the end.” Unhelpful: “That was rubbish.”
  3. Good review habits: ask every member, be honest, write one lesson, thank the helpers. Poor: skipping the review, blaming one person, only praising yourself.

Use it for: After projects, events, matches, competitions and at the end of every term.

Worked example: 🪞 Helpful or unhelpful feedback? “Your slides were clear; add a picture to slide 3.” → helpful feedback

  1. It praises one thing and gives one clear, specific tip.
  2. So it is helpful feedback.

Check: Try it: after your next team task, ask everyone two questions — what worked, and what should we fix? ✓
