Calendars — Logical reasoning for kids

Days of the week repeat every 7 days. To jump forward any number of days, divide by 7 and move on only by the remainder. Count the days in each month, and remember the leap year rule for February.

How to think it through

Odd days — “divide the number of days by 7; the remainder is how many weekdays to move on”

  1. Days later: divide by 7 and move on by the remainder.
  2. Days from 1 January: add the days of the months before (Jan 31, Feb 28 or 29, Mar 31 …), then the date − 1.
  3. Leap year: divides by 4 — but a century year (1900, 2000) must divide by 400.

Use it for: Calendar questions in reasoning tests, planning birthdays and holidays.

Worked example: 1 January 2025 is a Wednesday. What day of the week is 15 March 2025? Saturday

  1. 2025 is not a leap year: January 31 + February 28 = 59 days, then 14 more = 73 days after 1 January.
  2. 73 ÷ 7 = 10 remainder 3. Wednesday + 3 days = Saturday.

Check: 1 March 2025 is 59 days on (remainder 3) = Saturday, and 15 March is 14 days later = Saturday ✓
