If–then logic — Logical reasoning for kids

Rule: if it rains, the road gets wet. If you know it rained, you know the road is wet. If the road is dry, it did not rain. But a wet road does not prove rain — someone may have washed it!

How to think it through

Two sure moves — ““if” happened → “then” happens; “then” did not happen → “if” did not happen. Anything else: can’t tell”

  1. The “if” part happened → the “then” part must be true.
  2. The “then” part did not happen → the “if” part must be false.
  3. The “then” part happened, or the “if” part did not happen → we can’t tell.

Use it for: Logical deduction questions in aptitude tests, science reasoning, and spotting weak arguments.

Worked example: Rule: If it rains, then the road gets wet. Fact: The road does not get wet. What can you say about “It rains”? Must be false

  1. If it had rained, the road would be wet. The road is not wet.
  2. So it did not rain: “It rains” must be false.

Check: Rain would make the road wet; a dry road rules rain out ✓
