How to make an 8-bit Retro Racing game — retro game maker

Race down the road, dodge the traffic, grab fuel and reach the finish line — a top-down 8-bit racer you can change. Play it first, then open it in the Retro 8-bit Studio and change it until it is your own game.

🎮 Controls: ← → steer · ↑ faster · ↓ brake · press Z on the title screen to start

The numbers that make the game

At the top of the 8-bit (TIC-80) code are the settings — change one, run the game, and feel the difference. This is how game designers balance a game.

var MAX_SPEED = 4The top speed of your car
var STEER = 2How fast the car moves left and right
var TRAFFIC = 60Frames between new cars (smaller = more traffic)
var FUEL = 100A full tank
var GOAL = 6000How far it is to the finish line
var LIVES = 3Crashes before GAME OVER
var GRASS = 6The roadside colour (0 to 15)
var SOUND = trueFalse = a quiet game (F4 changes the sounds)
var MUSIC = trueFalse = no title tune (F5 changes the music)

7 ways to change the retro racing game

Try them in order. The studio ticks each one off when your change works.

  1. F1 Code: a faster car — change var MAX_SPEED = 4 to 6, then Ctrl+R to play.
  2. F1 Code: rush hour — var TRAFFIC = 60 → 25 (smaller = more cars).
  3. F1 Code: a longer race — var GOAL = 6000 → 12000.
  4. F1 Code: a desert road — var GRASS = 6 → 4 (any colour 0 to 15).
  5. F1 Code: your own title — change "RETRO RACING" to your race's name (CAPITALS look best).
  6. F2 Sprites: paint your own car (sprite 256).
  7. F4 Sounds: make your own crash sound — pick sound 2, draw new volume or pitch bars.
