The method

List and match — “list the factors (or multiples) of both numbers and find the common ones”

  1. Factor: divides with no remainder. Multiple: appears in the table.
  2. HCF: list the factors of both numbers; take the biggest one they share.
  3. LCM: list the multiples of the bigger number; take the first one the smaller number also divides.
  4. Prime: exactly 2 factors (2, 3, 5, 7, 11 …). 1 is not prime.

Use it for: Packing things into equal groups, timing events that repeat, and the factors and multiples chapter of Class 5 maths.

Worked example: What is the HCF of 18 and 24? → 6

  1. Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
  2. The highest common factor is 6.

Check: 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4, and 3 and 4 share no factor except 1 ✓
