Fractions with different denominators cannot be added straight away. First change them into equivalent fractions with the same denominator (the LCM of the two denominators): 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. To find a fraction of a number, divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator: 3/4 of 20 = 20 ÷ 4 × 3 = 15.
