The forgetting curve — Memory techniques for students
In plain words, the forgetting curve says: we forget most of something new in the first day or two — unless we review it. Each review slows the forgetting, so the next review can come after a longer gap. That is why reviewing the next day, then a few days later, then a week later works much better than reading it once and cramming the night before.
Review before it fades — “each review makes a memory last longer”
Helps you keep it: reviewing the next day, testing yourself, explaining to a friend, linking to what you know, a good night’s sleep.
Lets it fade: reading it once only, cramming the last night, learning without meaning, never testing yourself.
Review day = learning day + the gaps: learn on day 3, review 2, then 4, then 8 days later → 3 + 2 + 4 + 8 = day 17.
Use it for: New chapters, spellings, tables, poems and anything you will need weeks later.
Worked example: 📅 You learn 12 new spellings on day 3. You review 2 days later, then 4 days after that, then 8 days after that. On which day is your third review? → 17
Add the gaps: 2 + 4 + 8 = 14 days after day 3.
Day 3 + 14 = day 17.
Check: Try it: learn 10 new words today and test yourself tomorrow, in 3 days and in a week — count how many you keep ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
