The keyword method for new words — Memory techniques for students

Memory tip

Sound plus meaning — “link how a new word sounds to what it means”

1. Steps: hear the new word → find a sound-alike word → link it to the meaning → review the picture.
2. The keyword sounds like the new word; the picture must also show the meaning: billi = cat → “a cat paying a BILL”.
3. Review the picture later today and tomorrow, then with growing gaps.

Use it for: Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit or English vocabulary, science terms and names of places.

Worked example: 🗣️ In Marathi, “shala” means school. Which keyword picture helps you remember it? → a school in a SHAWL
