You need: a tub of water, a towel and small objects such as a cork, an ice cube, a coin, a pebble, a steel spoon and a ball of clay. What happens: the cork, the ice and the wooden stick float; the coin, the pebble and the spoon sink. Why: water pushes up on everything in it (upthrust). Things that are lighter for their size than water — less dense — float. Ice floats because water spreads out a little when it freezes, so ice is less dense than water. A lump of clay sinks, but pressed into a thin boat it floats, because the boat shape pushes aside more water.
