You need: moong seeds, cotton wool, two small bowls, water and a few days. What happens: the seeds on wet cotton swell and a tiny root pokes out in a day or two; the seeds on dry cotton do not change. Why: a seed needs water, air and warmth to start growing (germination). It carries its own food store, so it needs no soil to sprout. Seeds even sprout in the dark, but their leaves stay pale yellow without light.
