Body language: eye contact, posture and face — Communication skills for students

Body language is talking without words. It has four parts: eye contact (looking at the person for a few seconds at a time), posture (how you sit or stand), facial expression (a smile, a frown, a puzzled look) and gestures (a thumbs-up, waving, a namaste). Positive body language — standing tall, friendly eye contact, a relaxed smile, facing the person — makes people feel welcome. Rolling your eyes, slouching, turning your back or standing too close sends the opposite message.

Communication tip

Your body talks too — “open, calm and friendly says “I am listening””

  1. Positive body language: standing tall, friendly eye contact, a relaxed smile, facing the person, nodding to show interest, sitting up straight.
  2. Negative body language: slouching low, arms tightly crossed, rolling your eyes, turning your back, staring at your shoes, standing too close.
  3. Four parts: eye contact (looking at the speaker), posture (sitting up straight, slouching), facial expression (a warm smile, a frown), gesture (a thumbs-up, waving hello). Stand about an arm’s length away.

Use it for: Meeting new people, talking to teachers and elders, listening in class, and making friends.

Worked example: 🧍 Eye contact, posture, facial expression or gesture: slouching on the desk? → posture

  1. Slouching is about how you sit or stand.
  2. “slouching on the desk” is about posture.

Check: Try it: in your next conversation, face the person, keep friendly eye contact and smile — notice how they respond ✓
