When you are upset, it is easy to blame: “You always take my stuff!” The other person feels attacked and argues back. An “I” statement talks about your own feeling instead: “I feel upset when my things are taken without asking. I would like you to ask first.” It has four steps: how you feel, when it happens, why it matters, and what you would like. Nobody is blamed, so the other person can listen and help fix the problem.
✓ You passed this lesson’s test.
Start with “I”, not “you” — “share your feeling without blaming”
Use it for: Arguments with siblings and friends, feeling left out, and telling parents or teachers what is wrong.
Check: Try it: next time something annoys you, say one full “I” statement — I feel… when… because… I would like… ✓
