Messages and emails to teachers — Communication skills for students

Teachers get many messages, so yours should be polite, short and clear. An email goes in this order: a clear subject line, the greeting (“Good morning, Ma’am,”), the main message, a polite closing (“Thank you,”) and your name and class. Write in full sentences, check the spelling and send it at a sensible hour. “hey miss wat is hw” at midnight is too casual; “Good morning Ma’am, I was absent today because of fever. Could you tell me the homework? — Ananya, 6B” is just right.

Communication tip

Polite, short, signed — “greet, ask clearly, thank, and say who you are”

  1. Order: a clear subject line → the greeting → the main message → a polite closing → your name and class.
  2. Right for a teacher: a polite greeting, your name and class, a clear subject, short, full sentences, a thank-you at the end, checking spelling first.
  3. Wrong for a teacher: “hey wassup”, messages at midnight, ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, lots of emojis, no name at all, ten messages in a row.

Use it for: Missed classes, homework doubts, project submissions, leave requests and thank-you notes.

Worked example: 📧 Right or wrong in a message to a teacher: messages at midnight? → wrong for a teacher

  1. Teachers rest at night; messages should come at a sensible hour.
  2. “messages at midnight” is wrong in a message to a teacher.

Check: Try it: draft (do not send) a polite email to your class teacher asking a doubt — check all five parts are there ✓
