Types of communication — Communication skills for students

There are four main types of communication. Verbal communication uses spoken words — talking, phone calls, telling a story, a speech in assembly. Non-verbal communication uses no words — a smile, a nod, a shrug, a wave. Written communication uses words on paper or a screen — a letter to Nani, a note in the diary, an email. Visual communication uses pictures — a map, a bar chart, a traffic light, a no-entry symbol. Good communicators pick the right type for the job, and often mix them.

Communication tip

Ask how the message travels — “spoken words, body, written words or pictures”

  1. Verbal (spoken): talking on the phone, answering aloud in class, telling a story aloud, a speech in assembly.
  2. Non-verbal: a smile, a thumbs-up, nodding your head, a frown, crossing your arms, a shrug. Written: a letter, a text message, a note in the diary, an email, a notice on the board.
  3. Visual: a map, a bar chart, a traffic light, a diagram of a plant, a no-entry symbol, a picture timetable.

Use it for: Choosing how to share something: a call or a note, a chart in a project, signs at school and on the road.

Worked example: 🗂️ Which type of communication is a bar chart? → visual

  1. A bar chart shares numbers as a picture.
  2. So it is visual communication.

Check: Try it: walk around your home or school and find one example of each type — spoken, non-verbal, written and visual ✓
