Cardboard Bookmark Craft for Kids (Pressed Leaf)
Make a bookmark from an old cereal box with a pressed leaf or flower and a wool tassel — a 20-minute craft for kids that encourages reading.
What your pressed-leaf cardboard bookmark can look like
Materials
- Thin card from a cereal or biscuit box
- White paper
- A small leaf or flower, pressed flat in a heavy book for 2–3 days
- Glue stick
- Clear tape
- Wool for the tassel
- Crayons or sketch pens
Tools
- Ruler and pencil
- Child-safe scissors
- Hole punch (with an adult)
Steps
- Press a small leaf or flower inside a heavy book for two or three days until it is flat and dry.
- With a ruler, draw a rectangle 5 cm wide and 18 cm long on the box card.
- Cut it out. Thin box card cuts with child-safe scissors; ask an adult if it is thick.
- Glue white paper over the printed side and trim the edges.
- Glue the pressed leaf in the middle and cover it with clear tape so it stays safe.
- Write a favourite line from a book or your name, and decorate the border.
- Ask an adult to punch a hole at the top and tie a wool tassel through it.
⚠️ Safety noteAn adult uses the hole punch and cuts thick cardboard. Use fallen leaves and flowers, not ones picked from a neighbour’s garden.

- Measuring in centimetres with a ruler.
- Rectangles: opposite sides are equal.
- Pressing removes water from the leaf — it dries flat.
