Story starters that hook the reader — Creative writing for kids

The first line of a story is its hook. “This is a story about a boy” is dull. “Crash! The cricket ball smashed the window.” makes the reader want to know more at once.

Writer's tip

Grab them at once — “start with someone speaking, a question or a sound word”

  1. Start with someone speaking: “Don’t open that box!” shouted Grandpa.
  2. Start with a question: Where do lost socks really go?
  3. Start with a sound word: Splash! Kabir fell straight into the pond. Avoid “This is a story about…”.

Use it for: Starting every story and composition you write, and story-starter writing prompts.

Worked example: Why does this opening hook the reader? → it starts with a sound word

  1. The opening: Crash! The cricket ball smashed the window.
  2. It begins with the sound word “Crash!” — the reader hears the moment and wants to know what happens next.

Check: Compare it with “This is a story about a cricket ball.” — far duller ✓
