Storytelling aloud — Creative writing for kids

Telling a story aloud is a performance. Good storytellers speak clearly, pause before surprises, use different voices for characters, show feelings on their faces and look at their listeners.

Writer's tip

Tell it, don’t just read it — “speak clearly, pause, change your voice and look at your listeners”

  1. Speak slowly, clearly and loudly enough for everyone.
  2. Pause before a surprise and change your voice for each character (a deep voice for a giant, a squeaky one for a mouse).
  3. Look at your listeners and use your face and hands to show feelings and actions.

Use it for: Storytelling competitions, class presentations, show-and-tell and bedtime stories.

Worked example: Which is a good tip for telling a story aloud? → Change your voice for each character.

  1. Shouting every word and staring at the ceiling make a story hard to enjoy.
  2. Changing your voice for each character helps listeners know who is speaking.

Check: Try it: tell a story twice, once flat and once with voices — hear the difference ✓
