Choosing a story title — Creative writing for kids

A title is the first thing a reader sees. A good one is short, makes the reader curious and points to what the story is about — usually its main problem.

Writer's tip

Point to the problem — “a good title is short and points to the main problem or idea”

  1. Find the main problem or idea of the story.
  2. Choose the short title that points to it.
  3. Reject titles about another story, and long dull ones like “A Story That I Wrote One Day”.

Use it for: Naming your own stories and compositions, and “give a suitable title” questions.

Worked example: Read the story. Which is the best title for it? → A Puppy in the Storm

  1. The story: One stormy night, Diya heard a whimper in a lane in Kochi. A tiny puppy was shivering under a broken cart. Diya held out a biscuit and spoke softly to it. The puppy crept out and licked her hand. Diya named him Moti and made him a warm bed.
  2. The story is about a puppy shivering in the stormy night. The other titles are about a tyre and homework.

Check: The title names both the puppy and the storm ✓
