What is creative writing?

Creative writing is writing that comes from your imagination: stories, fables, poems and descriptions that make a reader see, hear and feel what you imagine. Good stories are built from the same blocks every time — characters, a setting, a problem, a solution, and a beginning, a middle and an end — and good writers make them vivid with the five senses, strong verbs, exact adjectives, similes and metaphors, sound words and lively dialogue. This free course teaches those skills step by step: Part 1 (ages 7–10) builds a story — characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning-middle-end, sequence words and what happens next; Part 2 (ages 8–12) makes writing vivid — the five senses, show don’t tell, similes and metaphors, onomatopoeia, strong verbs, adjectives and dialogue; Part 3 (ages 9–14) explores kinds of writing and storytelling — fables and morals, fairy tales, adventure, mystery and funny stories, first and third person, titles, story starters that hook the reader, telling a story aloud, rhyme and haiku. Every question has one correct choice, so practice is marked instantly, with “Show me how” for every step.

Creative Writing & Storytelling questions

What is creative writing for kids?

Creative writing is writing from your imagination — stories, fables, poems and descriptions. Children learn the parts of a story (characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning-middle-end) and the tools that make writing vivid: the five senses, show don’t tell, similes and metaphors, sound words, strong verbs, exact adjectives and dialogue. This free course teaches them in 24 short lessons.

Creative writing kaise sikhe? (Hindi)

रोज़ थोड़ा लिखें। पहले कहानी के हिस्से तय करें — कौन (character), कहाँ और कब (setting), क्या गड़बड़ हुई (problem) और कैसे सुलझी (solution)। फिर कहानी को रंगीन बनाएँ: पाँचों इंद्रियों वाले शब्द, “like” या “as … as” वाली उपमा (simile), और “was sad” की जगह ऐसे काम लिखें जो भावना दिखाएँ। हर lesson के सवाल हल करें और गलती हो तो “Show me how” दबाएँ।

What age or class is this creative writing course for?

Ages 7–14, roughly Class 2 to Class 9. Part 1 (story building blocks) suits ages 7–10, Part 2 (vivid writing) ages 8–12, and Part 3 (fables, kinds of stories, point of view, story starters, storytelling and haiku) ages 9–14. Older children can start with any lesson.

What are the elements of a story?

Characters (who), setting (where and when), a problem (what goes wrong) and a solution (how it is fixed), told in a beginning, a middle and an end. Sequence words like first, then, next and finally help the reader follow the order.

What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor?

A simile compares two things using “like” or “as … as”: the lake shone like a mirror, as brave as a lion. A metaphor says one thing IS another, with no like or as: the classroom was a zoo, the moon was a silver plate.

How do you write a haiku?

A haiku is a three-line poem. The first line has 5 syllables, the second 7 and the third 5. Clap the beats of each word to count: “Rain taps on the roof” is 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5. Haiku are often about nature or a season.
