Simple machines make work easier by letting us use a smaller force or push in a handier direction. There are six: the lever (a bar that turns on a pivot — a seesaw, a crowbar), the pulley (a rope over a wheel — a flagpole), the wheel and axle (a big wheel fixed to a rod — a doorknob, a steering wheel), the inclined plane (a ramp or slope), the wedge (a sharp edge that splits — an axe, a knife) and the screw (a ramp wrapped round a rod — a jar lid, a bolt).

Spot the six — “every machine around us is built from six simple ones”
Use it for: Science lessons on machines, a simple-machine hunt at home and designing a model crane.
Check: A door stopper is a wedge — a slope that jams under the door ✓
