Simple present tense — English grammar for kids

The simple present is for habits and facts: things that happen every day, every Sunday, always. The only change is with he, she, it or one name — the verb gets -s or -es.

The grammar rule

He, she, it: add -s — “with one person or thing, the verb takes -s or -es; with I, you, we, they it does not”

  1. Time words: every day, every Sunday, on Saturdays, twice a week, always, usually.
  2. He / she / it / one name → verb + s or es (watches, goes, studies). I / you / we / they → the base verb.
  3. Questions and “not” use do or does + the base verb: Does she play? He doesn’t play.

Use it for: Talking about your routine, hobbies and facts (The sun rises in the east), and in every tense chapter at school.

Worked example: Kabir ___ a cartoon every day. → watches

  1. “every day” is a habit, so we use the simple present.
  2. Kabir is one person, so the verb takes -es: watches.

Check: Replace Kabir with “he”: “He watches a cartoon every day” ✓
