In many Indian languages the vowels in “ship” and “sheep” sound almost the same, so the two words get mixed up. In English they are different words: the short “i” of ship is quick and relaxed, the long “ee” of sheep is stretched with a smile. The same is true for “full” (short) and “fool” (long).
