v and w sounds — English pronunciation practice

Many Indian learners use one in-between sound for both v and w, so “vest” and “west” sound the same. Fixing it is easy once you feel it: for v, your top teeth gently touch your lower lip and the sound buzzes; for w, your lips make a small round “oo” shape and no teeth touch at all.

How to say it

Teeth for v, round lips for w — “v: top teeth touch the lower lip; w: round your lips, no teeth”

  1. v: rest your top teeth on your lower lip and buzz — van, very, voice.
  2. w: round your lips like “oo”, then open them — water, wet, west.
  3. Check with a mirror: teeth showing on the lip = v; round lips = w.

Use it for: Words like very, village, vegetable, west, week and world — and in names of places and people.

Worked example: Which word fits? “My shoes are ___ from the rain.” → wet

  1. Say both words: vet – wet. Only the first sound is different.
  2. Shoes in the rain are wet: round your lips for the w.

Check: Wet shoes, round lips for w ✓
