What is pronunciation practice, and why does it matter?

Pronunciation is how we say words: the sounds, the beats (syllables), which beat is strong (stress), and how the voice rises and falls (intonation). Good pronunciation is not about sounding British or American — Indian English is a proud variety of English. It is about being understood easily by everyone, in class, in interviews and on calls. Many learners in India mix up a few sounds because their first language does not separate them: v and w (“vest” and “west”), s and sh, the two th sounds, long and short vowels (ship and sheep). Others add an extra beat (“jump-ed”, “is-school”), say silent letters, or stress the wrong syllable (DEVelop instead of deVELop). This free course works on exactly these points in three parts: Part 1 (sounds), Part 2 (spelling and sound) and Part 3 (stress and rhythm). Questions are spoken aloud by your browser’s voice, the examples can be practised with the microphone, and stress is shown with CAPITALS — no phonetic symbols needed. Ten minutes a day, said out loud, makes a real difference.

English Pronunciation Practice questions

What is English pronunciation practice?

Pronunciation practice trains the sounds, beats, stress and intonation of English so that people understand you easily. This free course has 24 short lessons with pronunciation exercises: you listen to the browser’s voice, choose the answer, and say the examples aloud with the microphone.

Angrezi ka uchcharan kaise sudhaarein? (Hindi)

What age is this pronunciation course for?

It is for learners aged 8–18. Part 1 (sounds) suits ages 8–14, Part 2 (spelling and sound) ages 9–16, and Part 3 (stress and rhythm) ages 11–18. Adults preparing for interviews find Parts 2 and 3 useful too.

Will this change my Indian accent?

The aim is clarity, not a new accent. Indian English is a respected variety of English. We practise the few sounds and stress patterns that most often cause misunderstandings — v/w, th, long and short vowels, extra syllables, word stress — using a neutral, international model.

Do I need to know phonetic symbols (IPA)?

No. Stress is shown with CAPITALS and syllables with hyphens, like de-VEL-op and WENZ-day. Every question can be heard with the 🔊 button.

Which words do Indian learners often mispronounce?

Common ones are Wednesday (WENZ-day), vegetable (VEJ-tuh-bul), comfortable (KUMF-tuh-bul), salmon (SAM-un), develop (di-VEL-up), hotel (hoh-TEL), recipe (RES-uh-pee), school (SKOOL, not is-KOOL) and -ed words like jumped (one beat). Lesson 12 practises them by syllables.

How do I get a pronunciation certificate?

Sign in and pass the 20-question test of a lesson (16 or more right) to earn its badge. Pass every lesson in a part — Part 1 is lessons 1–8, Part 2 is 9–16, Part 3 is 17–24 — and you get that part’s certificate, with a code anyone can check.
