Describing words make writing better — English writing skills for kids

“Riya picked a flower” is correct, but plain. “Riya picked a pretty white flower” lets the reader see it. Describing words (adjectives) make your writing come alive — as long as they fit.

Writing tip

Paint the picture — “describing words tell size, colour, taste, sound and feel”

  1. A describing word tells more about a noun: its size (tiny), colour (white), shape (round) or look (pretty).
  2. The sentence with more fitting describing words paints the clearer picture.
  3. Match the sense: tastes → sweet, sour, salty; sounds → loud, quiet; feels → soft, rough, sticky; looks → bright, shiny.

Use it for: Descriptive paragraphs, picture composition, stories and “describe your pet / your school” writing.

Worked example: Which sentence describes the flower best? → Riya picked a pretty white flower.

  1. The choices: “Riya picked a flower.”, “Riya picked a white flower.”, “Riya picked a pretty flower.”, “Riya picked a pretty white flower.”
  2. The last one uses two describing words for the flower — “pretty” and “white” — so it paints the clearest picture.

Check: Close your eyes: “a pretty white flower” is easier to picture than “a flower” ✓
