Kinds of sentences — English writing skills for kids
Every sentence has a job. It can tell something, ask something, show a strong feeling or ask someone to do something — and the job decides the end mark.
What does it do? — “tells → statement, asks → question, strong feeling → exclamation, orders or requests → command”
Statement: tells something — ends with a full stop (Riya plays cricket in the park.).
Question: asks something — ends with a question mark (Where is Kabir going?).
Exclamation: shows a strong feeling (What a tall tree! How sweet the mango is!) — ends with !. Command: tells or asks someone to do something, starting with a doing word or Please (Wait for me at the gate.).
Use it for: Using the right end mark, and “identify the kind of sentence” questions in school tests.
Worked example: What kind of sentence is this? → command
The sentence: Wait for me at the gate.
It asks someone to do something and starts with the doing word “Wait” — it is a command.
Check: Add “Please”: “Please wait for me at the gate.” — still a request, still a command ✓
Read every choice carefully, then tap the one that is written correctly. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
