Avoiding repetition — English writing skills for kids

“Farhan has a new bag. Farhan takes Farhan’s bag to school.” sounds clumsy. Good writers name a person once, then use a pronoun — and swap a word used twice for one that means the same.

Writing tip

Say it once, then replace — “after the first time, use he / she / it or a word that means the same”

  1. After the first time, replace the name with a pronoun: he or she before the verb, his or her before a thing.
  2. Use the doer form (He, She) at the start of a sentence — never Him or Her.
  3. If a describing word comes twice, change the second one to a word with the same meaning (a big box in a huge room).

Use it for: Stories, diary entries and letters, where the same person appears again and again.

Worked example: Which word should replace the name in the gap? → He

  1. The sentence: Farhan has a new bag. ___ takes it to school every day.
  2. Farhan is a boy and the word comes before the verb “takes”, so we need the doer form: He.

Check: “Farhan has a new bag. He takes it to school every day.” — no name repeated ✓
