Putting sentences in order — English writing skills for kids

Stories and instructions only make sense in the right order. To unjumble them, ask what must happen first and what each sentence needs to have happened before it.

Writing tip

What needs what? — “a step that needs another step comes after it”

  1. The first sentence introduces who or what it is about and needs nothing before it.
  2. Each next sentence follows from the one before (you cannot get wet in the rain before it starts to rain).
  3. The last sentence finishes the story or the job.

Use it for: Jumbled-sentence exercises, story writing and writing instructions or recipes.

Worked example: These sentences of a story are jumbled. Which sentence comes SECOND? → On the way home, heavy rain began to fall.

  1. The sentences: Mum gave Dev hot soup and dry clothes. On the way home, heavy rain began to fall. Dev forgot his umbrella one cloudy morning. Dev got wet and shivered all the way home.
  2. First Dev forgets his umbrella; next the rain begins; then he gets wet; last Mum gives him soup. The second sentence is: On the way home, heavy rain began to fall.

Check: Read all four in order — each one follows from the one before ✓
