Order: First (step 1), Then / Next (middle steps), Finally (the last step).
However, … → the next sentence says something different or surprising. So, … → it is the result.
because → gives the reason inside one sentence.
Use it for: Writing recipes, instructions and stories that flow, and linking-word exercises.
Worked example: Choose the linking word for the gap: → Then
The steps: First, put an egg in a pan of water. ___, boil it for ten minutes. Next, cool the egg in cold water. Finally, peel the shell and eat the egg.
The gap is step 2 of 4 — a middle step — and “Next” is already used, so it is: Then.
