Writing tip

Main idea first — “the topic sentence says what the whole paragraph is about”

  1. Read the detail sentences and ask: what are they ALL about?
  2. The topic sentence names that main idea in one sentence.
  3. A sentence about a different topic cannot open the paragraph, however nice it sounds.

Use it for: Paragraph writing in every class, and the first line of every composition.

Worked example: Which sentence is the best opening (topic sentence) for this paragraph? → I got a new bicycle on my birthday.

  1. The paragraph: ___ It is red with a shiny silver bell. Its seat is soft and comfortable. I ride it to the park every evening.
  2. All the details are about a bicycle, so the best opening is: I got a new bicycle on my birthday.

Check: Every detail (bell, seat, riding to the park) fits “I got a new bicycle” ✓
