The sentence that does not belong — English writing skills for kids
A good paragraph sticks to one topic. A sentence about something else — even a true one — confuses the reader. Finding it trains you to keep your own paragraphs on track.
Stick to the topic — “a sentence about a different topic does not belong in the paragraph”
Read the first sentence: it tells the topic.
Check each other sentence: is it about that topic?
The one about a different topic does not belong.
Use it for: Editing your own paragraphs, and “strike out the odd sentence” exercises.
Worked example: Which sentence does NOT belong? → Sentence 4
Read the paragraph: 1. My grandmother has a lovely garden. 2. Red roses grow along the fence. 3. She sprinkles the plants every morning. 4. A green board hangs at the front. 5. Butterflies visit the marigold flowers.
The topic is grandma’s garden. Sentence 4 is about a classroom board, so it does not belong.
Check: Without sentence 4 every sentence is about the garden ✓
