Story: beginning, middle and ending — English writing skills for kids

Every good story has three parts. The beginning tells who it is about and how it starts, the middle tells what happens (often a problem), and the ending tells how it all turns out.

Writing tip

Start, problem, solution — “the beginning sets up, the middle tells what happens, the ending ties it up”

  1. Beginning: introduces the character and the situation.
  2. Middle: what happens next — the problem and what the character does.
  3. Ending: the problem is solved and we know how the character feels.

Use it for: Story writing, completing a story from a beginning, and story worksheets.

Worked example: Which sentence fits the gap? It is the ENDING of the story. → Grandmother hugged Nisha with joy.

  1. The story: Nisha's grandmother lost her gold ring. Nisha searched the whole house for the ring. At last she found the ring under the sofa. ___
  2. The ring is found, so the ending tells how it turned out for the same people: Grandmother hugged Nisha with joy.

Check: The ending uses the same people (Nisha, grandmother) and closes the problem ✓
