Writing tip

Look, then write — “describe the people, things and actions that are in the picture”

  1. Look at the whole picture first: where is it — a park, a market, a station?
  2. Then describe each part: who is there and what they are doing (A woman is buying bananas.).
  3. Do not add things that are not in the picture.

Use it for: Picture composition in Class 2–5 English exams, and describing scenes in stories.

Worked example: Which sentence describes this picture? → A cow is standing in the middle of the road.

  1. Imagine this picture: A fruit market: stalls piled with fruit, a woman buying bananas, a cow standing in the road and a boy riding a bicycle.
  2. The cow standing in the road is in the picture: A cow is standing in the middle of the road. Umbrellas, soil and oil lamps are not.

Check: The picture shows “a cow standing in the road” ✓
