Adding fractions: different denominators — Fractions for kids

Halves and thirds are different-size pieces, so 1/2 + 1/3 cannot be added straight away. Change both to sixths (the LCM of 2 and 3): 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

The method

LCM first — “change both fractions to the LCM of the bottoms, then add the tops”

  1. Find the LCM of the two bottom numbers.
  2. Change each fraction to that bottom number (multiply its top and bottom by the same number).
  3. Add the tops, keep the bottom, and simplify.

Use it for: Adding unlike fractions in Class 5–7, recipes, distances and measurements.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

  1. The LCM of 2 and 3 is 6: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
  2. Add the tops: 3 + 2 = 5, so the answer is 5/6.

Check: 5/6 − 1/3 = 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2 ✓
