The method

1 whole = b/b — “write 1 as a fraction with the same bottom, then subtract the tops”

  1. Same bottom number: subtract the top numbers and keep the bottom.
  2. To take a fraction from 1, write 1 as b/b (1 = 10/10).
  3. Simplify the answer.

Use it for: Finding what is left: cake left over, the rest of a journey, the part of a tank still empty (Class 4–6).

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 1 − 3/10 = 7/10

  1. 1 whole = 10/10.
  2. Subtract the tops: 10 − 3 = 7, so the answer is 7/10.

Check: 7/10 + 3/10 = 10/10 = 1 ✓
