The method

Add the tops — “same-size pieces just add up; the bottom number stays”

  1. Check that the bottom numbers are the same.
  2. Add the top numbers; keep the bottom number.
  3. Simplify the answer (6/8 = 3/4); if the top equals the bottom, the answer is 1.

Use it for: Adding shares of the same whole: slices, parts of a day, parts of a journey (Class 4–6).

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 3/8 + 3/8 = 3/4

  1. Same bottom number: add the tops, 3 + 3 = 6, and keep 8: 6/8.
  2. Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 2: 6/8 = 3/4.

Check: 3/4 = 6/8 = 3/8 + 3/8 ✓
