Finding the whole from a part — Fractions for kids

If 2/5 of a number is 12, then 2 equal shares make 12, so one share is 6. The whole has 5 shares: 30. This is the fraction-of-a-number idea run backwards.

The method

Back to one part — “from the part, find one share, then build the whole”

  1. Divide the given part by the top number: that is one share.
  2. Multiply one share by the bottom number: that is the whole.
  3. Check: the fraction of your answer must give the part.

Use it for: Pocket money and price questions, class strength questions and Olympiad puzzles (Class 6–8).

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: If 2/5 of a number is 12, what is the number? → 30

  1. 2/5 is 12, so 1/5 is 12 ÷ 2 = 6.
  2. The whole is 5 parts: 6 × 5 = 30.

Check: 2/5 of 30 = 30 ÷ 5 × 2 = 12 ✓
