Fraction word problems — Fractions for kids

Word problems hide a fraction sum in a story. Rotis eaten, pizzas for a party, money spent, overs bowled — read carefully, decide which operation the story needs, and check that the answer makes sense.

The method

Find the fraction sum — “decide: fraction of, add, subtract, multiply or divide — then work it out”

  1. Underline the whole and the fraction in the story.
  2. “Of” means multiply; “left” means subtract from the whole; “each gets” means multiply or divide.
  3. An over has 6 balls: 1/2 over = 3 balls, 1/3 over = 2 balls.

Use it for: Word problems in Class 5–8 maths, Olympiads, and everyday sharing, shopping and sport.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Mother makes 12 rotis. The family eats 3/4 of them at lunch. How many rotis are left? → 3

  1. Rotis eaten: 3/4 of 12 = 12 ÷ 4 × 3 = 9.
  2. Left: 12 − 9 = 3.

Check: 9 eaten + 3 left = 12 rotis, and 3 is 1/4 of 12 ✓
