Fraction of a shape — Fractions for kids

A square cut into 8 equal parts with 3 parts coloured shows 3/8. The parts not coloured show the rest: 5/8. You can also work backwards and find how many parts to colour to show a fraction.

The method

Part out of all — “coloured parts on top, all the equal parts below”

  1. Fraction coloured = coloured parts / all the equal parts.
  2. Fraction not coloured = (all parts − coloured parts) / all parts.
  3. To show a/b of a shape with N parts: N ÷ b gives the group size, then colour a groups.

Use it for: Shaded-shape questions in Class 3–5 maths, Olympiad picture questions, and art and rangoli patterns.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: A rectangle is divided into 12 equal parts. How many parts should you colour to show 3/4 of it? → 9

  1. 3/4 means 3 out of every 4 equal parts.
  2. 12 parts make 12 ÷ 4 = 3 groups of 4.
  3. Colour 3 in each group: 3 × 3 = 9.

Check: 9/12 = 3/4 (divide the top and the bottom by 3) ✓
