The method

Top and bottom — “the denominator names the size of the pieces, the numerator counts them”

  1. Denominator (bottom) = how many equal parts the whole is cut into.
  2. Numerator (top) = how many of those parts we take.
  3. Parts left = denominator − parts taken. “Three fifths” is written 3/5.

Use it for: Reading and writing fractions in Class 3–5 maths, recipes, and sharing anything into equal parts.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: A pizza is cut into 8 equal pieces. Kabir eats 3 pieces. What fraction of the pizza is left? → 5/8

  1. The pizza has 8 equal pieces, so the denominator is 8.
  2. Pieces left: 8 − 3 = 5, so the numerator is 5.

Check: 3/8 eaten + 5/8 left = 8/8 = 1 whole pizza ✓
