Multiplying fractions — Fractions for kids

Multiplying fractions is the easiest operation: top × top and bottom × bottom. “Of” means ×, so 2/3 of 3/4 is 2/3 × 3/4. A whole number is a fraction with bottom 1.

The method

Straight across — “multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms, then simplify”

  1. Multiply the top numbers.
  2. Multiply the bottom numbers (a whole number n is n/1).
  3. Simplify the answer (or cancel common factors first).

Use it for: Area of rectangles with fraction sides, “fraction of a fraction” questions, and recipes (Class 6–8).

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2

  1. Top × top: 2 × 3 = 6. Bottom × bottom: 3 × 4 = 12: 6/12.
  2. Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 6: 6/12 = 1/2.

Check: Cancel first: the 3s cancel and 2/4 = 1/2 ✓
