Percent and decimals — How to calculate percentage

Percent means ÷ 100, and dividing by 100 just moves the decimal point two places to the left: 35% = 0.35. To go back, multiply by 100 and move the point two places to the right: 0.6 = 60%.

How to work it out

Two hops — “percent → decimal: the point hops 2 places left; decimal → percent: 2 places right”

  1. Percent → decimal: divide by 100 (point two places left): 35% = 0.35, 7% = 0.07.
  2. Decimal → percent: multiply by 100 (point two places right): 0.6 = 60%, 1.25 = 125%.
  3. More than 100% gives a decimal bigger than 1: 150% = 1.5.

Use it for: Calculators, bank interest, cricket strike rates, and multiplying by a percent quickly (18% of a price = 0.18 × the price).

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: 7% as a decimal = 0.07

  1. 7% means 7 ÷ 100.
  2. Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places to the left: 7 → 0.07.

Check: 0.07 × 100 = 7, so 0.07 = 7% ✓
