Active listening — Interview skills for students

Good communication starts with listening. Active listening means your eyes, ears and mind are on the speaker: you nod now and then, keep your phone away, wait for a pause and then check what you heard (“So the form is due on Friday — did I get that right?”). In an interview, listening well means you answer the question that was actually asked.

Tip

Listen, check, reply — “give full attention, check you understood, then answer”

  1. Good listening: steady eye contact, nodding now and then, short notes, waiting for a pause, asking a follow-up, summing up their point.
  2. Poor listening: checking your phone, interrupting, finishing their sentence, changing the topic, only waiting to talk.
  3. Check what you heard by saying it in your own words (paraphrasing). If you did not hear, politely ask them to repeat.

Use it for: Classes, instructions for projects, interviews, phone calls, group work and every conversation with a friend.

Worked example: 👂 Good or poor listening: asking a follow-up? → good listening

  1. A follow-up question builds on what the speaker said and fills the gaps.
  2. So it is a sign of good listening.

Check: Try it: in your next conversation, sum up what the other person said in one sentence before you reply ✓
